All of the "T" Men: Jahed
Sarboland
Azad Art Gallery, Tehran,
12–17 November, 2010
offset, 98x68 cm
The works of Jahed Sarboland are a direct reference to the subversion that emerges in all ideologies. Ideology does not reflect actual relations. The dark room of ideology
is a reflection of the bewitched world that distances people from reality. Knowledge stands aside, and an illusion based on an illusion becomes its substitute. The work of the artist reveals the subversion of values, and insists on the fact that art does not reflect reality like a mirror. He tries to exhibit the metamorphosed faces of people around him. The poster plane is covered by falling letters, leaving drawn visible traces. The letters are transformed into wounded and bleeding objects.
The title of the exhibition is derived from the novel Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley and published in 1932. In the book, the symbol venerated in place of the Christian cross is the "T" sign, in homage to Henry Ford who introduced mass production of automobiles with the Model T.
The science-fiction imagery anticipates
practices of reproductive technology, sleep-learning and psychological manipulation,
used in the technically developed consumer society manipulated by a dictatorship. The paintings of Jahed Sarboland are a direct reference to the book, depicting characters of "T" men.
