Majid Abbasi (born 1965)
Bam, the Everlasting Heritage,
Niavaran Cultural/Historic
Complex, Blue Gallery
26 December, 2004–4 January,
2005, offset, 98x68 cm
The poster relates to the Iranian
city Bam, formerly known as The
Emerald of the Desert, a cultural
jewel and UNESCO World Heritage
Site that was devastated on
December 26, 2003 by a massive
earthquake. The historic city of
Bam was one of the most popular
tourist spots in Iran, best known
for its 2,000-year-old citadel,
built out of mud bricks, clay straw,
and the trunks of palm trees, the
largest structure of its kind in the
world. Unfortunately, more than 80
percent of the historic citadel has
been destroyed. It appears that
much of that heritage may have
been lost forever.
